If you've read some of my older blog posts, you'll know that I am no longer a fan of balloons. Not because they don't look wonderful, but because of their adverse affects on our environment. The foil ones in particular, because they NEVER biodegrade! So, I thought I'd dedicate this post to some brilliant balloon alternatives that I came across on Pinterest this week.
This first one is genius and so simple and effective! Get a whole ball of wool, tie around the 'waist' then cut and trim the ends. The result, a giant pom pom! Saves all that time winding wool around your ring of cardboard. With wool bought at your local $2 store, a few of these hung on the wall would make a wonderfully inexpensive, bold, colourful statement!
This next idea is similar to the one above, but even cheaper ....and perhaps even more gorgeous! Made by cutting up old t-shirts into strips to make cotton pom poms. A number of these hanging up would immediately add a touch of sophistication to your party. No one would ever know it was that old stained t-shirt!
How about this gorgeous garland made from cardboard boxes! Just run some cut out, painted, shapes carefully through your sewing machine and you have this amazing transformation!
There are so many fabulous ideas out there. However, I really love the ones that can be made out of free, easily accessible, natural materials. The photos below show just how stunning a garland of painted leaves, feathers or foliage can look.
So next time you reach for that packet of balloons, stop and think of these brilliant balloon alternatives! Imagine, you could have so much fun making some of these garlands with your kids, whilst teaching them the importance of recycling and caring for our environment.... And you'll end up with a far more unique and beautiful set of decorations.
