We all want to make our kids happy. We also want to come up with a party theme that's not the same as everyone else's. Certainly the idea of the eternal Elsa party can wear a bit thin...! However, in my experience, when a Disney character theme is demanded, offering alternatives and brainstorming ideas together, invariably results in extreme excitement, leaving Disney all but forgotten!
I think the best approach is going along with a passion that your kid has. Whether it be vintage aeroplanes or giraffes. Or a favourite food, country or colour. Then mix them up. Have a pink giraffe party or a red vintage aeroplane party. An orange tribal princess party or a silver robot theme. Although there may not always be party 'sets' of plates, cups etc out there to buy, with a bit of thought, you can pull something very effective out of the bag. Stick with the theme and run with it! Push it as far as you can!
Getting inspiration from the internet
There are some wonderful theme ideas if you look on sites like Pinterest or Kara's parties. Have a browse and get inspired! Take a look at these from the Kara's party website. A Cinco de Mayo garden party, Moroccan princess party and Modern science party ....no Elsa in sight! Basically they illustrate that there are endless possibilities!
Holding the theme together.
You'll notice that colour is the main thing that holds these parties together. The theme is secondary. But wherever possible, elements relating to the theme have been introduced. If it is pink giraffes you end up going for, then buy some plastic toy giraffes and just spray-paint them pink. Using these as cake toppers, stuck on the tops of jars for going home presents, or being elements in a game, would be very effective. Try printing out pink giraffe patterns from your computer to use for a table runner or to wrap around cutlery. Go searching for a giraffe-shaped cookie cutter for pink-iced cookies or fairy bread and so on and so forth. You'll be amazed, once you start thinking about it, how many things can be 'fiddled' to fit in with your theme.
Just remember, the stricter you are on colour and pattern, the more effective the overall party will be. Don't be tempted to add in those cute little cartoon giraffe paper plates you saw in the shop. Or the purple and green giraffe patterned party bags. They'll only dilute the overall look and feel. Be strict with yourself, stick with the pink and have fun getting creative!
So go ahead, try picking that seemingly crazy party theme and run with it! Elsa will be forgotten (temporarily) and a great, unique experience will be had by all!
