I love the idea of advent calendars! As a kid, the build up to Christmas was almost unbearable, so to have a count-down with a small treat everyday, alleviated the pain! It's no different for my girls now...! To open the little shutter windows is so fun and to find a chocolate inside, even better. But after a few weeks of doing this, the novelty tends to wear off. There's also the problem of the chocolate melting badly in this Singapore heat. Bought ones are hard to come by here, anyway. And when you do find one, they tend to be rather on the tacky side. So I decided it was time I made one!
Turning toilet rolls into Christmas prettiness!
I set out with the intention of making the whole thing out of recycled materials. Far better to teach my girls on a daily basis to recycle and reduce waste. So many decorations or party items in general, are used once, then thrown away. I vowed we could do better! (See my post 'Raining in the disposable party culture.' http://www.hoppingharesparties.com/reigning-disposable-party-culture/).
All it has taken are a pretty silvery branch off a fallen tree, toilet rolls, old Christmas wrapping paper, lengths of ribbons floating around the house, paper bags, boxes and a sprig of Christmas tree discarded by the local nursery. The only things I bought were the wooden and metal numbers from the $2 shop, Daiso. With a dab here and there of white paint, the whole thing has come together easily and looks so pretty!
Three daughters x 24 days...perfect! They will take it in turns to open each morning, except for a few larger treats that they will open together. Inside are some chocolate coins and sweets from Marks & Spencer's. Then there are larger treats like a trip to watch a Christmas movie. To go to Winter Wonderland and some pocket money to go and buy a decoration for their bedrooms. But of course Christmas is not all about receiving. There are also a few little notes to say how we can contribute in some way to our chosen charity.
So we will count down to the day when there is just one box dangling off the branch...all by itself...the countdown complete!
Happy Christmas crafting everyone!
